LASIK

Imagine if tomorrow you no longer needed glasses or contacts.

Imagine if tomorrow you no longer needed glasses or contacts! Refractive surgery includes procedures that treat refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Though various refractive surgery treatments exist, the most popular is LASIK or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.

Is LASIK for you? LASIK is an acronym for Laser in Situ Keratomileusis. This means that we sculpt your cornea, the windshield of the eye, to modify its shape in such a way that glasses are no longer needed. Glasses are wonderful and many frames are so pretty. But sometimes glasses are just inconvenient. So now at least there is a choice.

In terms of safety it is possible to maximize safety by choosing a procedure such as advanced LASEK. Recovery time may be a bit longer than LASIK but it is an excellent option for those who are very hesitant about having laser correction because they require absolute safety. It is always important that your surgeon be readily available after the procedure. So it is best to avoid “fly by night” operations and out of town surgeons unless they can demonstrate convincing availability when needed.

In terms of age, there are no real limitation other than needing to be older than 18 as the procedure is only approved past that age. Past the age of 40, the issue of reading as compared to distance vision will need to be addresses. There are a number of options and they are best discussed with your surgeon in detail, and possibly experimented with in terms of contact lenses, before any laser procedure is undertaken.

Seniors can definitely undergo laser surgery such as LASIK but should make sure that they do not have a cataract. Often cataract extraction and lens replacement can eliminate the need for glasses in many circumstances. For individuals who have undergone cataract surgery and still have a need for glasses because of astigmatism for example, LASIK can be an excellent choice to achieve spectacle free distance vision, months to years following the original cataract surgery.

In conclusion laser correction surgery is a very rewarding procedure to the patient (and even to the surgeon who sees his/her patient achieve their visual goals and enhance their freedom and quality of life). The EYE Center is happy to offer these choices to our patients and we are always available for consultation and to answer our patients questions.

LASIK is performed while the patient reclines under a surgical device called an excimer laser in an outpatient surgical suite.
First, the eye is numbed with a few drops of topical anesthetic. Once the cornea is flattened, a hinged flap of corneal tissue is created using an automated microsurgical device, either a laser called a keratome, or an instrument called a microkeratome blade. This corneal flap is lifted and folded back. Then the excimer laser preprogrammed with the patient’s unique eye measurements is centered above the eye. The surgeon checks that the laser is positioned correctly. The patient looks at a special pinpoint light, called a fixation or target light, while the excimer laser sculpts the corneal tissue. Then the surgeon places the flap back into position and smoothes the edges. LASIK financing is available for as low as $37/eye/month at The Eye Center.
